Road Trip Diaries: Athens of the South

I’m back today with another outfit post from our road trip to Kentucky. After we left Kentucky, we took a very leisurely route on our way home. We stopped to stay in Nashville, Tennessee for two nights because there was no way I was driving through without seeing the city! I had never been before but always wanted to visit, and Nashville did not disappoint us!

On this particular day we spent the morning in Kentucky, made the three hour drive to Nashville, and then explored the city a little bit in the evening. I wanted to wear an outfit that could take me through the whole day with no fuss. I tend to pack light on trips so that I don’t have to deal with a bunch of outfit changes. I always bring my most comfortable (but cute) clothes and shoes with the hope that I won’t ever have to fuss with what I’m wearing. I’d like to think that I’m pretty low maintenance on vacations, but I’m sure my husband would disagree with that!

Anyway, our hotel in Nashville was in an awesome location. We were directly across the street from Vanderbilt University, and just down the street from Centennial Park. After we checked in to our hotel and relaxed for a bit, we decided to get out and walk around. Visiting the park was on my Nashville bucket list because they have a Parthenon replica inside the park. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you know that we went to Greece on our honeymoon last year and visited the real Parthenon in Athens. I think it’s kind of silly and totally awesome that there is a Parthenon replica in Nashville, which has a fascinating history that you can read more about here. Apparently Nashville is known as “Athens of the South,” which I don’t completely understand but I’m totally on board with it anyway. We had an awesome visit enjoying the beautiful cool weather and snapping a million selfies. It was definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Nashville for the first time.

My next outfit post will feature more about Nashville, so stay tuned!

Trend to Try: Summer Hats

Can you guys believe I got this hat for only $12? George and I went to the outlet mall in Cypress a few weeks ago and I came across this hat at LOFT. Y’all know I’m a sucker for stripes so I had to get it! I was prepared to pay full price ($24) but when I went up to the register it rang up for half off! I’m sorry I can’t link the exact match since it was from the outlet, but it was purchased about two weeks ago so I’m sure you could go find it. I’ve also linked to similar options in the shoppable widget below.

I recently started pinning a lot of summer outfit inspiration and I realized that almost all of the people I pinned were wearing hats! I bought a hat last summer in Galveston that I wore constantly (see evidence here and here), but all the pool and beach time really wore it out. I figured it was time for a new one this year! This summer I’d also love to pick up different styles like a panama hat or a boater hat. I love the idea of a giant floppy hat, but I own three of them and they very rarely leave my closet. I feel like a big floppy hat is really only appropriate for the beach, while a fedora style like I’m wearing today can be worn anytime. Y’all know I preach a lot on versatility, so I was happy to add this neutral, classic style to my closet!

Also – I love this tank from Stitch Fix that I first mentioned in my review video here. I actually wear it a lot, so I’m surprised this was the first time I photographed it for my blog! It’s just a fun and comfortable top to throw on any time.

New Denim

I finally got some new denim, y’all! I usually only buy a new pair of jeans about once a year. I actually really hate pants – I hate to wear them and I hate to buy them. I’d prefer to live in dresses all day, every day…but I have to remind myself that it’s good to have variety in my closet (and I need something to pair with all my tops!).

I have to say that despite my hatred towards pants, I actually love these jeans. This is my first pair of Blank Denim and I can’t get over how soft they are! This brand is a little more expensive than your typical Levi’s, but they are definitely affordable compared to other designer denim brands. I ordered these on a whim during the Shopbop sale a few weeks ago for 25% off. I figured they might not fit, but with free shipping and returns it was a risk-free decision. These jeans do fit me a little tight, but the denim is super stretchy so they feel OK to wear all day. I definitely intend to lose weight soon, and I think if I were down about five or so pounds they would fit perfectly. In the meantime I can still wear them, but I know that all of my clothes in my closet would fit better if I was a little lighter. I’ve got to drop that first year of marriage weight!

Anyway…this week is wedding week for my sweet cousin Lauren! Things are going to be a little crazy for me this week, but I am so excited for all of the upcoming festivities! Feel free to follow me on Snapchat if you want to see what I’m up to (username: shopandtwirl). I’ve been trying to post more snaps, including daily #ootds and random thoughts. Have a great week everyone!
